Volunteering with Children: Learning Support and Safeguarding
Education support is most useful when it complements teachers, protects children and responds to clearly identified learning needs.
Focus on useful educational support
The archived Bangladesh education project mentions tutoring, mentoring, helping with learning materials and extracurricular activities. Volunteers should work within a structured plan designed with educators.
Useful work may include reading practice, assisting small learning groups or preparing materials that local teachers can reuse.
Protect students
Children are entitled to privacy, dignity and consistent safeguarding regardless of the enthusiasm of visitors. Do not photograph, interview or exchange private contact details with students outside approved procedures.
Never assume that a short visit is enough to diagnose a learning need. Defer to trained teachers, caregivers and safeguarding staff.
- Follow the local school’s safeguarding rules.
- Respect boundaries and approved supervision.
- Ask how learning materials will be used after you leave.
Prepare to be flexible
Different schools and organizations may use different languages, curricula and teaching methods. A useful volunteer asks what is needed and adapts to teachers’ instructions rather than introducing unfamiliar activities without consent.
