Preparing for Bangladesh: Culture, Etiquette and Daily Life
Practical cultural preparation helps volunteers and travelers build more respectful relationships in their host communities.
Learn before you arrive
Read about the destination’s languages, community customs, climate and transportation. The previous VAT schedule includes a Bengali language and cultural orientation during the early days of the volunteering program.
Practising a few polite Bengali greetings can be helpful, while following your local coordinator’s advice avoids unnecessary misunderstandings.
Show respect in everyday interactions
Dress appropriately for the setting, ask before photographing people, follow local norms at religious sites and be sensitive to gender, age and community expectations.
Travelers should avoid generalizations: practices vary across Bangladesh’s many regions, families and cultural communities.
- Ask permission before taking portraits.
- Respect prayer spaces and community routines.
- Listen more than you speak in unfamiliar settings.
Be ready for change
Heat, seasonal rain, traffic and different daily rhythms can affect plans. Leave margin in your schedule and take sensible precautions with food, water and transport.
